> [!hint] Learning from past mistakes > I used to have two folders `Free` and `Paid` but it soon became a nightmare to keep track of font licences. I didn't like the idea of having duplicate file structures[^1] for each kind of licence either, so this is how I've set things up now. ## Folder Structure Only add more specific subfolders when needed. ``` Fonts ├── Serif │ └── Slab Serif ├── Sans Serif ├── Display ├── Blackletter ├── Script │ └── Handwriting ├── Monospace └── Decorative └── Symbols ``` ## Folder Name Folder name should include the licence type e.g. - 📁(OFL) Open Sans - 📁(Personal) SomeFont Demo - 📁(Desktop) PaidFontName - 📁(Web) SuperCoolFont - 📁(ePub) IReallyLikeFontsOkay The licence and invoice (where possible) should be stored within the folder. ## File Management Further sorting/searching can be applied with tags using a file manager like [[Eagle]] for properties like: `bold`, `thin`, `heavy`, `playful`, `elegant`, `textured`, `art-nouveau`, `medieval`, `distressed`, `pixel`, `outline`, `latin`, `latin-extended`, `foundry-name`, `store-name` or to add a link to where it was purchased from. Only activate fonts that are likely to be used - the rest can be viewed / enabled in the file manager. ### Font Document I was recently inspired[^2] to create a font document in [[Affinity Publisher]] that displays my favourite font choices across different pages/artboards based on type. When I need to create a logo, I can use find & replace to swap out the preview text. I'll give this a trial run but I'm not sure how much I'll use it in comparison to a file manager. *** ### Inspirations [^1]: https://creativemarket.com/blog/how-professional-designers-organize-their-fonts [^2]: https://www.tiktok.com/@doodlejuice/video/7236383274375957786
